Designers Charles and Ray Eames pioneered
the forming of flat, laminated wood into curved
shapes to make chairs and furnishings. They
“took their fun seriously” and created witty kid’s
furniture and clever toys. Maybe they could have
designed some skateboard decks — but not these
mini-sized fingerboards (Figure
E
). Still, it’s fun
to imagine.
The angled kicktail mini deck is the perfect
parody of Eames’ trademark bent wood technique
(Figure
F
). The graphic designs are laser etched
into thin plywood. The trucks and wheels were
cannibalized from existing toy fingerboards.
Antonio Gaudí is Spain’s most celebrated
architect, known for his modernist style.
He created entire languages of shapes and
forms, which he used in his designs for his
Sagrada Familia cathedral, classic Art Nouveau
residences like Casa Mila, and the colorful and
playful gardens of Parc Güell in Barcelona (Figure
G
). But “what if” he had made this Catalonian
candy dispenser?
