Chapter 2. Cabling and Connectors

OBJECTIVES

This chapter covers the following CompTIA-specified objectives for the “Media and Topologies” section of the Network+ certification exam:

Recognize the following media connectors and describe their uses:

  • RJ-11

  • RJ-45

  • AUI

  • BNC

  • ST

  • SC

  • Specific cable types use one or more types of connectors. Being able to identify which connector is associated with which cable is an important skill for a network administrator.

Specify the characteristics (e.g., speed, length, topology, cable type, etc.) of the following 802.3 (Ethernet) standards:

  • A wide variety of network media are used in networking. To pass the Network+ exam, you will need to understand the various media types and their characteristics.

Choose the appropriate media type and connectors to add a client to an existing network.

  • As a network administrator, you will work in a range of environments. Understanding the requirements to connect systems to the network is a key skill.
