Adding New Databases to the Workspace

As your company develops new databases for you to use, you must create new icons for accessing those databases. To create the icons, you must know the name of the database and its location (on which server and in which folder). It's likely that this information will be provided to you by your system administrator or application developers when new databases become available to you. When you need to access a new database, follow these steps:

  1. From the Notes workspace, click the workspace page on which you want to add the database icon and choose, File, Database, Open from the menu. The Open Database dialog box appears (see Figure 12.1).

Tip

I Chose File, Database, New—Now What? This menu selection is reserved for application developers creating new databases, not for users creating new database icons. Choose cancel and return to step 1.

Figure 12.1. Be certain to select the right server when adding database icons.

  1. In the Server drop-down list, choose the name of the server on which the database resides (this is supplied by your systems administrator or application developer). If the database resides on your own computer, but you have deleted the icon, select Local in the drop-down list and choose the database from the databases on your hard drive.

  2. In the Database list, select the database you want to add to your workspace page.

  3. Click one of the following commands:

Done Closes the Open Database dialog box without adding a database to your workspace or, if you have clicked the Add Icon button, closes the dialog box and returns you to the workspace.

Help Displays Help information on adding a database to your workspace.

Open Adds the database icon to your workspace and opens the database for you.

Add Icon Adds the database icon to your workspace and keeps the dialog box open. This is useful if you want to add several database icons to your workspace at one time.

About Displays the About Database document for the currently selected database. This is helpful if you are not certain of the database name, or if two databases have similar names.

  4. If you have finished with the dialog box, but it continues to remain on screen, click Done to close it and return to your workspace.

Caution

I Put the Icon on the Wrong Page! If you placed the icon the wrong workspace page, simply click and drag it to the tab of the correct page. Refer to Lesson 2, "Getting Started with Notes," if you need additional help moving the icon.
