Refining the User Interface

You can tweak the appearance of the default view to include more relevant information in the user interface.

1.
Click Setup Create Objects Position to return to the main page for the object.

2.
Scroll down the page to the Search Layouts section. This section contains layouts for the different ways that users can access this object, other than the home page for the object.

3.
Click Edit for the Positions Tab to bring up the page shown in the following figure.

This page allows you to select other fields for display on the home page for the Position object tab.

4.
Move Job Description and Start Date to the Selected Fields box and click Save.

Before leaving the development environment, you can enable a few more features to make the Force Platform user interface more useful and flexible.

This modification changes the appearance of the default view for the tab. You can create additional views for the tab by selecting Create New View on the Home page for the object, or edit existing views by clicking the Edit link for a selected view. The interface to create and change views is like the interface you just used.

5.
Click Objects Location and then the link for the default page layout in the Page Layouts section of the object.

6.
At the top of the page, click Mini Page Layout. The Mini Page Layout is used to show some of the fields for the object in a reduced window.

7.
Make sure that the City, State/Province and Country fields are in the Selected box and click Save.

One of the places this Mini Page Layout is used is when a user ‘hovers’ over a link to a Location record.

In order to allow organizations to add this new feature into their environment at their own pace, the hovering feature was not enabled by default. Turning it on, along with another two features, is simply a matter of configuration.

8.
Click Customize User Interface in the App Setup section of the left hand panel to bring up the page shown below.

You can see a number of interesting features available to your environment by just checking a box.

9.
Check the Enable Hover Details and Enable Inline Editing checkboxes in the top section, and the Enable Collapsible Sidebar checkbox in the Sidebar section, and click Save. As their names imply, the two additional features you enabled allow users to edit values in a detail page without having to explicitly go to an Edit page and ‘collapse’ the sidebar, giving the main page more screen real estate.

10.
Click the Positions tab. The sidebar should be collapsed, as shown in the figure below. If not, grab the right edge of the sidebar and drag it to the left to see the fruits of your labor.

You are already getting used to the instantaneous effects of your efforts in the runtime application. In the page shown below, the sidebar starts out collapsed, with little arrows that allow the user to bring it back into the picture when they want to see it.

1.
Bring the sidebar back by dragging the edge to the right.

2.
Click a Position record and double click on a field to see the inline editing capability you enabled for the fields. Click on Cancel to return to the page.

3.
Leave your mouse over the Location field on the page to bring up the Mini Page Layout, as shown in the figure below.

You have changed the way your application displays and the information readily available to users in a significant way, with only a few configuration changes. Your next step enlarges the logical capabilities of your application by adding more objects and relationships to the Force Platform.
