Filters

Filters give users a way to further limit the results returned from an initial search. There is a page layout for Search Filter Fields in the Search Layouts for an object. To enable the use of search filters for an object, you have to add some fields to this layout, which has been done for the Position object in your current application.

In the search results page, there is a link to show filters if a search filter layout with fields exists for the object. You can click on the link to show the filters, as illustrated below.

Figure 84. Filters in Advanced Search

Users can enter one or more values in each search filter fields, separating the values with commas or, for numeric fields, with the OR operator. If a user enters more than one value in a filter field, the filter limits the display to records that match any of the values. Values entered for dates, numbers or record IDs are compared with an = (equals) operator, while all other fields compare with the contains operator.

Conditions listed in different search fields are combined with an AND operator, which means that listed records must match a value in all of the specified filter fields.

The Force Platform supports a number of special date filter criteria, which allow users to indicate values relative to the current date. For more information on these filters, please refer to the on-line help.

Although you do not really have to do much to enable search capabilities for all your Force Platform applications, knowing about what the built-in search can do for your users helps you plan how to use these capabilities to enhance your application and design your data structures.
