PRE-PRODUCTION
P
re-production is the first phase of game development and is arguably the
most critical one. During pre-production, the goals of the game are de-
fined and agreed upon by the team, management, and the publisher. At
the end of pre-production, a full game plan is created, which details what work
needs to be done, who is going to do it, and when it needs to be completed.
This section of the book focuses on the key tasks to complete during pre-
production. Information is presented on defining and approving the concept,
analyzing risks, and prototyping and creating budgets, schedules, and staffing
