380 THE GAME PRODUCTION HANDBOOK, 2/E
two months after internal code release for this console game to ship. Of course,
every project is different, but it is good to be aware of each of these phases so you
can more accurately plan for the ship date.
23.5 CHAPTER SUMMARY
The code release process is one of the most critical steps in developing a game.
This is the point at which the developer and publisher agree that the game has
been thoroughly tested and is ready to be sent to the manufacturer for replica-
tion and shipped to store shelves. If a game is code released too soon, there is a
risk that a crash bug will be discovered after the game ships, which will have a
negative impact on the game’s sales. This chapter discussed a process for code
releasing builds to make sure that all the details are accounted for and the game
is really ready to go.
