SNMP

ESXi hosts give all of the support for SNMP agents to run on the ESXi host, and all NSX Virtual Switch instances or vSphere Distributed Switch instances. SNMP network MIBs give standards-based visibility into NSX Virtual Switch objects.

SNMP network monitoring has been advanced to give support for SNMPv3, support for IEEE/IETF networking MIBs for standard Layer 2 information monitoring, and Layer 3 and higher protocol (TCP/UDP) MIB support. The following are some key parameters regarding virtual switches that are available through standard MIBs:

  • Port state (up or down) per virtual switch (vSphere standard switch, vSphere Distributed Switch)
  • Traffic counters per port, per VLAN
  • LAG data for network adapter teaming details
  • LLDP information for the Layer 2 topology discovery

Using this enhanced MIB support, network administrators can collect important virtual network data that can help in the monitoring and troubleshooting of network issues.

For more information about the notifications generated from the ESXi host's SNMP agent, refer to the KB article determining the MIB module listing, name, and type of an SNMP OID (2054359) at: http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2054359.
