Deleting and Reinstalling Apps
App Store is where you can search for, browse, review, and download programs that run on your iPad. More than half a million free or paid apps from Apple and third-party developers are available, with new or updated apps arriving every day.
The store is curated, meaning that Apple must approve every app. Apple can also yank an app from the store if it crashes too much, violates store policy, is complained about excessively, or whatever. Yanked apps disappear from the store but not from your iPad; after you download an app and back it up, it’s yours.
To use App Store, you must be connected to the Internet (Wi-Fi or cellular signal) and have an Apple ID. If you didn’t set up an Apple ID when you set up your iPad, tap Settings > Store to sign in to your account or to change or create an Apple ID.
You can find apps by using the store’s browse and search tools. Apps are available in many languages, though store content varies by country.
Some apps (particularly games) have parental ratings. To prevent children from installing or opening certain apps, tap Settings > General > Restrictions.
• In App Store, tap one of the following buttons in the bottom toolbar:
Featured. The Featured screen shows new and notable apps spotlighted by Apple’s staff (via editorial fiat or paid placement). Flick to the bottom of the screen to see staff favorites. Buttons at the top of the screen let you show Apple-featured apps; list popular new apps; or sort apps by name, release date, or popularity .
Genius. The Genius screen recommends new apps based on the apps you’ve already downloaded.
Top Charts. The Top Charts screen lists the currently most popular paid, free, and top-grossing apps in the store . To show more apps, flick left or right in the lists. To show only a certain type of top apps, tap Categories at the top of the screen. These lists are updated many times each day.
The Top Charts and Featured screens usually are the best starting points for browsing for apps.
Categories. The Categories screen lists apps by type (Games, Productivity, Weather, and so on). Tap a category to see new, popular, featured, or sorted apps in that category.
Purchased. The Purchased screen lists the apps (paid or free) that you’ve downloaded previously. To restore an app that you deleted, find it in the list and then tap the iCloud icon . You don’t have to pay again for previously purchased apps. To hide an app in this screen, flick it left or right.
Updates. The Updates screen list apps that have been updated by their developers since you downloaded them. Updates are free.
Buttons at the bottom of most App Store screens let you log in or out of your Apple ID account, redeem iTunes gift cards, or get technical support for a problem.
1. In App Store, tap the Search field in the top-right corner of the screen, type one or more keywords, and then tap Search on the keyboard (or tap one of the suggested apps in the drop-down Results list) .
To cancel a search, tap Cancel in the top-left corner of the screen. To clear the Search field, tap in that field.
2. Flick left or right to review the Results list.
After you find an app, you can download it to your iPad. To avoid carrier charges on 4G/3G models, download or update apps over a Wi-Fi network rather than a cellular network. The number of apps that you can download is limited only by the amount of space available on your iPad.
To sync your app purchases across all your iDevices automatically (if you own more than one device), tap Settings > Store > Apps > On (below Automatic Downloads). For details, see “Using iCloud” in Chapter 4.
1. In App Store, browse to or search for the app that you want.
2. (Optional) Tap the app’s icon to see its Info screen, where you can read a description, see screen shots, read customer ratings and reviews, send the app to someone as a gift, and more .
3. Tap the app’s price (or tap Free) and then tap Buy Now (or tap Install App).
If you’ve already downloaded the app, Install or Installed appears instead of a price. If an update is available for an installed app, Update appears.
4. Enter your Apple ID and password, if requested, and then tap OK.
The download starts. A dimmed app icon showing a progress meter appears on your Home screen. You can flick among your Home screens or open other apps during the download.
When the download completes, the app is installed immediately. (If a download is interrupted, your iPad restarts the download when it reconnects to the Internet.)
See Chapter 1 for details on managing app icons on your Home screen and on opening, switching among, and closing apps.
Developers occasionally update their apps with bug fixes, new features, and other improvements, and release the new version through the store. If any updates are available, a numbered badge, denoting the number of apps to be updated, appears on App Store’s icon .
All updates go through the store; you don’t have to search for them on the developers’ Web sites.
1. In App Store, tap Updates in the bottom toolbar .
A list of updated apps appears.
2. (Optional) To learn more about an update, tap its icon in the list.
3. To update any single app, tap Free next to its name.
or
To update all your apps, tap Update All at the top of the screen.
4. Enter your Apple ID and password, if requested, and then tap OK.
Progress meters appear on the Home-screen icons of the apps being updated. When the download completes, updates are installed immediately.
If you don’t want an App Store app, you can delete it from your iPad. Deleting an app also delete all the data and documents associated with the app; to back them up, see the iCloud and iTunes sections in Chapter 4. You can’t delete built-in apps.
1. On the Home screen, touch and hold the app’s icon until it wiggles and a badge appears in its corner.
The badge won’t appear on built-in apps.
2. Tap and then tap Delete.
3. Click the Home button.
1. In App Store, tap Purchased in the bottom toolbar.
2. Find the app in the list and then tap next to its name.
Many apps keep their options within the app itself; you reach them by tapping Options, Tools, or something similar while you’re using the app. Some apps, however, have a separate set of options that you can access in the Settings app. To set these options, tap Settings, flick to the bottom of the left column to the list of individual apps (below Apps), and then tap the name of the app whose options you want to change .
If you’re running a small-screen app created for the iPhone or iPod touch, you can scale it up to double size to run on your iPad’s big screen. Open the app and then tap the 2X button in the bottom-right corner of the screen. Scaled-up apps look blocky (pixelated). If this effect distracts you, go back to actual size by tapping 1X.
