Image iTunes is the gateway to Apple’s online iTunes Store, where you can download music, movies, TV shows, and other digital content. To download from the store, you need an Apple ID and a Internet connection (Wi-Fi or cellular).

Image Music, audiobooks, and other audio content downloaded from the iTunes Store appear automatically in the Music app, where you can play them or create playlists. You can also use Music to listen to audio ripped from CDs or downloaded from the Internet.

Image Movies, TV shows, and other video content downloaded from the iTunes Store appear automatically in the Videos app, which lets you watch them on your iPad or on an external display. You can also use Videos to watch videos ripped from DVDs or downloaded from the Internet.

Shopping in the iTunes Store

Use iTunes to add content to your iPad. You can browse and buy music, movies, TV shows, audiobooks, and more.

To shop in the iTunes Store

1. Open iTunes on your iPad Image.

The store opens to the Music screen the first time and remembers your last open screen thereafter.

2. To browse for content, tap one of the buttons at the bottom of the screen (Music, Movies, TV Shows, and so on).

To search for content, tap the Search field at the top of the screen and then type an artist, actor, title, or other keyword.


Tip

The buttons at the top of the screen let you see featured content, top sellers, or Genius recommendations. Buttons at the bottom of most iTunes Store screens let you log in or out of your Apple ID account, redeem iTunes gift cards, or get technical support for a problem.


3. To display detailed information about an item, tap the item’s cover or thumbnail image.

The item’s Info screen appears Image Image. This screen, which varies by content type, shows items such as a description, genre, tracks, episodes, release date, ratings, reviews, links to related material, and more.

4. To download an item, tap a price button, or tap Free.

You can preview clips before you buy. For music, buy albums or individual tracks. For movies, buy or rent high- (HD) or standard-definition (SD) video. For TV shows, buy entire seasons/series or individual episodes.


Tip

To download classes and materials from iTunes U(niversity), get the free iTunes U app from the App Store (see Chapter 5).


5. To see downloads in progress, tap Downloads at the bottom of the screen.

When a download completes, the item lands in the Music app or the Videos app, depending on its type.


Tip

To quickly download an item that you bought and deleted or bought on another iDevice, tap Purchased at the bottom of the iTunes screen. To sync your music purchases across all your iDevices automatically, tap Settings > Store > Music > On (below Automatic Downloads). For details, see “Using iCloud” in Chapter 4.


Playing Music

You can use the Music app to listen to music, audiobooks, and other audio content downloaded from the iTunes Store or copied from your computer. You can listen to audio over the built-in speaker, earphones plugged in to the headphone jack, or wireless Bluetooth headphones or speakers. The iPad’s built-in speaker is silenced when you use earphones or external speakers. See also “Adjusting the Volume” in Chapter 1.

To play music or audio content

1. Open Music.

2. Tap the buttons along the bottom of the screen (Playlist, Songs, and so on) to browse your collection.

3. To play an item, tap it.

4. Use the controls at the top of the screen to control playback Image.

Tip

To see all the tracks on the current album, switch to the Now Playing screen and then tap Image in the bottom-right corner. Tap a track to play it. (If the Now Playing controls aren’t visible, tap the screen first.)


Music still plays when you switch to another app or when the iPad screen is locked. To show playback controls while you’re using another app, double-click the Home button to show the multitasking bar at the bottom of the screen Image and then flick left to right. Double-clicking the Home button also shows playback controls when the screen is locked.

Image These controls operate the currently playing app, or—if the music is paused—the most recent app that played. The icon for the app appears on the right; tap it to open the app.


Tip

To set other Music options, tap Settings > Music. iTunes Match is a subscription service that backs up all your music—even songs ripped from CDs or downloaded from the Internet—in iCloud. For details, see www.apple.com/itunes/itunes-match.


Playing Videos

You can use the Videos app to watch movies, TV shows, and other video content downloaded from the iTunes Store or copied from your computer. As with Music, you can listen to audio through the built-in speaker, earphones plugged in to the headphone jack, or wireless Bluetooth headphones or speakers.


Tip

To play video on an HDTV or another external display, see “Streaming with AirPlay” and “Screen Mirroring” in Chapter 3.


To play movies, TV shows, or video content

1. Open Videos.

2. Tap the buttons along the top of the screen (Movies, TV Shows, or Podcasts) to browse your collection.

3. To play an item, tap it, or tap Image.

4. Use the onscreen controls Image to control playback.

Tip

You can rotate your iPad to watch in portrait or landscape view.
