GUID Partition Table

The GUID Partition Table (GPT) is part of the UEFI standard, and was designed to address the limitations of MBR. The 2 TB limit has been extended by creating larger partition entries (64 bits rather than 32 bits). This has extended the drive size limit to 8 ZB (~8 billion TB), assuming there are 512-byte sectors.

GPT also overcomes the issue of corrupted MBR (for example, the Mebromi rootkit) by storing a copy of the partition data, as well as storing cyclic redundancy check (CRC) values to verify that the drive is intact and whether the stored copy might need to be restored. GPT is compatible with most operating systems, although for Windows only UEFI-based computers can utilize GPT.
