Appendix B. Need to Know More?

Introduction

This appendix provides a list of references that we think are useful either for CCENT/CCNA exam preparation or for general networking knowledge.

CCENT and Basic Networking

  • The Cisco CCNA Prep Center is a mine of useful resources, with reference articles, videos, forums, mock tests, and links to other material, as well. Sign up and visit often; you’ll see the two of us online every once in a while, too:

    www.cisco.com/go/prepcenter

  • CCNA Exam Prep 2 (Exam 640-801); ISBN: 0-7897-3519-9

Our good friend and mentor Dave Minutella, along with his coauthors Heather Stevenson and Jeremy Cioara, wrote the companion volume to this book. CCNA Exam Prep 2 covers all the CCNA material in much greater detail and in a superbly accessible writing style. If you like our book, you’ll like theirs, too.

  • CCNA Portable Command Guide, 2nd ed.; ISBN-10: 1-58720-193-3

All the CCNA 640-802 commands in one compact, portable resource.

  • CCENT/CCNA ICND1 Official Exam Certification Guide (CCENT Exam 640-822 and CCNA Exam 640-802), 2nd ed.; ISBN-10: 1-58720-182-8

The Grand Master of CCNA authors, Mike’s colleague Wendell Odom has just finished an updated set of texts for the new exams.

  • CCNA Video Mentor (Exam 640-802); ISBN-10: 1-58720-168-2

Wendell Odom shows his face and delivers a great series of tutorials on CCNA configuration skills. Great for a Friday night.

  • CCNA Flash Cards and Exam Practice Pack (CCENT Exam 640-822 and CCNA Exams 640-816 and 640-802), 3rd ed.; ISBN-10: 1-58720-190-9

Some people love to use flash cards as a convenient way to put themselves on the spot. Mike was the technical editor for this book, so it gets the stamp of approval.

  • The IEEE is the standards authority for networking. For information on any 802.x standard, they are the original source:

    www.ieee.org

  • For the definitive—and exhaustive—list of port numbers, visit this website:

    www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers

  • Cisco has created a simple and effective Flash presentation on the Spanning-Tree Protocol. It’s a bit dated in that it uses bridges instead of switches, but the theory is well presented:

    www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/spanning_tree1.swf

  • This page on Cisco’s public documentation site links to many Ethernet-related topics:

    www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk389/tk214/tsd_technology_support_protocol_home.html

  • The following is the home page for the Catalyst 2960 series LAN switches. You will find links to command references, configuration guides, and other interesting information:

    www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6406/tsd_products_support_series_home.html

  • The following page links to several documents discussing WAN technologies, including Frame Relay, PPP, and HDLC. There is much more detail in these documents than a CCNA needs, so just look for the relevant sections.
