Chapter 5. Data Management

We have seen how to create different objects, fields, and relationships. We can now create a page layout for the objects and add business logic. Now that we have the backbone of the application, it's time to add data. Force.com provides us with some really efficient tools to manage, manipulate, and clean data.

In this chapter, we are going to learn:

  • How to import large datasets using the data loader
  • How to import data using the Data Import Wizard
  • How to execute the data loader via the command line
  • The different Salesforce IDs and why we use them

The basics of data operations

When an application migrates from the legacy system to Salesforce.com, a tremendous amount of data is present in the legacy system. This legacy data is crucial for maintaining the continuity in the business, and it can be exported from a legacy system in CSV format and then imported into Salesforce for further use. Similarly, data from Salesforce can be exported and shifted to a data center to create backups.
