Force.com licenses

Every user on the Force.com platform requires a primary user license and different feature licenses. We can add multiple feature licenses to a user but can add only one user license.

Let's find out how many licenses are available in your organization:

  1. Go to Setup | Administration Setup | Company Profile | Company Information.
  2. Below the Company Profile in the related list, the number of licenses available for use is shown in the following screenshot:

To apply the user licenses, perform the following steps:

  1. Go to Setup | Administration Setup | Manage Users | Users.
  2. Create New User or Edit an existing user.

    Tip

    A user once created cannot be deleted. We can only make a user active or inactive. Creating an active user consumes a user license, which is directly linked to the billing of Salesforce usage. It is recommended that you practice this in a developer organization. Consult your administrator if you are creating a new user in the production organization.

  3. Select the user license from the drop-down menu, as shown in the following screenshot:

Let's take a look at the different license types that are available on Salesforce.

Depending on the type of license, we get access to the different objects on Force.com. The following table summarizes the use of the main licenses:

Salesforce and Chatter licenses

The basic Salesforce license provides access to the entire Salesforce application while the Salesforce platform license is used to deploy a custom app for users on Force.com.

A Chatter free license is used to invite your coworkers to use Chatter, but they do not get access to Salesforce while the Chatter external license is used to invite customers to particular groups.

Feature licenses

To extend the Salesforce application beyond basic CRM, we can use feature licenses. Most of the feature licenses come bundled with the CRM user licenses; however, additional licenses can be purchased for further use.

Let's see how many feature licenses are available for us to use:

  1. Go to Setup | Administration Setup | Company Profile | Company Information.
  2. Below the Company Profile in the related list, the number of feature licenses available for use is shown in the following screenshot:

    Feature licenses are used to access the special features of the Salesforce application. A user can utilize more than one feature license, for example, the Service Cloud Console and Sales Cloud Console license.
