FIELD GUIDE: HOW TO BE A FASHION DESIGNER
FABRICS
Fabrics are the cloths that result from
the joining of threads, filaments, and
fibers. Currently their presence in
the market is so varied it is common
to find different dictionaries in each
country that enumerate and classify
them. Specialized magazines are also
a good tool for learning about innova-
tions in this field, as new fiber discov-
eries lead to new fabrics. There are
two primary methods of production
for obtaining these materials. One is
continuous fabric production (respon-
sible for cloth and knit fabrics) and
the other is discontinuous production,
which is responsible for the manufac-
turing of felt, netting, lace, and glued
fabrics, classified as nonfabrics:
Fabric cloths: obtained by inter-
weaving vertically arranged threads
at right angles, the warp, which will
form the long side of the cloth, with
threads positioned horizontally, the
weft. Depending on the density of
the threads in the warp and the
weft, and how these are combined,
different fabrics are created.
Knit fabric: obtained by knitting
loops of thread, arranged either
in the direction of the warp or the
weft. The way in which the horizon-
tal rows and the vertical rows are
joined give this type of fabric its
elasticity. Woven-knit fabric, formed
by loops interwoven along the weft,
has a construction similar to that
of weaving, although more compli-
cated, making it more resistant and
less inclined to come apart.
Nonfabrics: the result of the com-
pression of fabrics through the appli-
cation of heat, friction, or chemical
products. These fabrics do not have
longitudinal fibers, so they can be
cut in any direction. They can be
artificial, such as felt or latex, or
natural, such as leather and fur.
It is important that fabrics respect the
philosophy of the collection and that
they be coherent with what has been
designed; if they are medium-high or
high-range garments, the fabric cho-
sen must be in keeping with them.
ACCESSORIES
Buttons, ribbons, trimming, embroi-
dery, crystal, studs, etc.—they are
the details often applied to a basic
conventional design, transforming it
into another piece within the collec-
tion, one that stands out and makes
a difference. As with other elements
that must be studied and taken into
consideration when planning a col-
lection, it is fundamental to be pre-
cise in the selection of accessories
and to maintain a certain degree of
coherency.
