Idea 40: Maintaining morale to maintain motivation

Maintaining high morale is key to high motivation. Morale covers both the individuals separately and the team as a whole. Where an individual has low morale, the issues have to be addressed on an individual basis, but where group or team morale is low, the answer lies in diagnosing whether or not there is a lack of confidence in:

  • Ultimate success.
  • Current plan(s).
  • Leadership/management.
  • The capability of the team or organization.

images Morale is basically the group's or individual's attitude to the common task, their confidence in the ultimate possibility of success and their consequent sense of purpose and collective energy.

It can be necessary to remotivate the team by rebuilding its self-confidence. You can do this by:

  • Revisiting purpose – why is this important and worthwhile?
  • Clarifying objectives.
  • Reviewing the plans and resources needed.
  • Demonstrating that success is within your grasp.
  • Training for higher performance.
  • Involving the team and individuals in key decisions.

imagesIs individual and/or team morale high or low? What action should I and other leaders take to keep it high or to raise it if it's low?
