The starting point is to do a self-assessment and take stock of yourself in the overall context of the direction you would like to be heading. Bear in mind the generic role of a leader described in Part One. What natural strengths and weaknesses do you bring to that role?
Personal Role
What are my strengths/what special skills do I have?
What are my values (i.e. what is important and worth-while to me)?
What would be my preferred ways of earning a living?
What activities/situations do I want to avoid?
What achievements would I like to list as having been successfully met in my life?
What would I like the highlights of my obituary to be? (This is a really good way of focusing the mind, as is asking yourself how you would like your epitaph to read.)
Do I regularly take stock of my skills, values and preferences?
