Follow-up test

Teambuilding

  • Have you applied the task, team and individual approach in leading your team?
  • Have you agreed with your team members their main targets and continuing responsibilities, together with standards of performance, so that you can all recognize achievement?
  • Do you recognize the contribution of each member of the team and encourage other team members to do the same?
  • Have you set – and maintained – positive group norms or standards?
  • In the event of success, do you acknowledge it and build on it? In the event of setbacks, do you identify what went well and give constructive guidance for improving future performance?
  • How does your team rate against the criteria for a high-performance team?

Getting the best from your team

  • Do you consciously try to motivate people by understanding their needs and aspirations?
  • Are you motivated?
  • Do you feel that you are getting the best from people?
  • Are targets set and monitored, with feedback being clearly given?
  • Do you show to those who work with you that you trust them by, for example, not hedging them around with unnecessary controls?
  • Are there adequate opportunities for training and (where necessary) retraining?
  • Do you encourage each individual to develop his or her capacities to the full?
  • Is each individual's overall performance regularly reviewed in face-to-face discussions?
  • Does financial reward match contribution?
  • Do you make sufficient time to talk and listen, so that you understand the unique (and changing) profile of needs and wants in each person, enabling you to work with the grain of nature rather than against it?
  • Out of the eight principles of motivation, which is the one that you need to give much more attention to?

Be sparing with praise but liberal with thanks.
