Reviewing the Platform

The solution in this chapter was built using SharePoint Foundation. Since the other SharePoint licenses build upon what is in Foundation, let’s take a minute to discuss some of the additional options available if you are using a different SharePoint platform.

Using SharePoint Online with Office 365

If you are using SharePoint Online, the implementation of this solution should be nearly identical. You will have access to the same lists and libraries used in SharePoint Foundation as well as the ability to create SharePoint Designer 2010 workflows.

Using SharePoint Server Standard

If you are using SharePoint Server Standard you will have access to more advanced Enterprise Content Management (ECM) features. One example that relates to this solution is document sets, which are mentioned earlier in the chapter. Other potentially useful features in Server Standard include Federated Search (search external to a SharePoint farm), managed metadata to classify content, or tagging and rating to allow users to provide opinions about content. Federated Search uses an external search index outside the current farm. Enterprise search can search content external to SharePoint just by crawling it. This can also be done in SharePoint Foundation by using Search Server or Search Server Express.

Using SharePoint Server Enterprise

If you are using SharePoint Server Enterprise you will have access to all the features mentioned in SharePoint Server Standard and more. For the purposes of this solution, there are no clear advantages to using Enterprise over Standard.
