Linking Project Management Tools to PMBOK

When tasked with selecting individual project management (PM) tools or designing PM toolbox or PM process, many PM practitioners refer to A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) as their major source of PM knowledge. This is a logical choice, since PMBOK is a widely accepted PM standard developed by the Project Management Institute. To make the task of the PM practitioners easier, this appendix links PM tools covered in this book with PMBOK's PM processes and knowledge areas in tables that follow. More specifically, for each PM tool we will first indicate in which of the following PM processes it can be used:

  • Initiating Processes (Init.)
  • Planning Processes (Plan.)
  • Executing Processes (Exec.)
  • Controlling Processes (Cont.)
  • Closing Processes (Clos.)

Then, we will show in which of the following knowledge areas the tool can be used:

  • Project Integration Management (Int.)
  • Project Scope Management (Scope)
  • Project Time Management (Time)
  • Project Cost Management (Cost)
  • Project Quality Management (Qual.)
  • Project Human Resource Management (HR)
  • Project Communications Management (Com.)
  • Project Risk Management (Risk)
  • Project Procurement Management (Proc.)

Symbols in parentheses are used as a key for the following tables.
