For the fashion designer, the editing process requires a clearly de ned
goal and knowledge of the distinct methods for how to correct, condense,
and organize information. The designer modi es ideas by working with
language—written, spoken, and most important, visual. The “images” a
designer creates are not simply of garments though. They are also made up
of each interaction and transaction surrounding the offered products and
services. Therefore designers must at all times be able to dissect, discard,
and recompose any facet of the work to properly re ect their message.
A critical mind will collect data through many channels. Fashion designers
will nd their senses—whether of sight, smell, sound, taste, or touch—
fruitful lters for gathering and analyzing information. Built-in tools for
asking nonverbal questions, these instinctual pathways automatically cut
out what is not needed or wanted to narrow in on what matters.
Editing also involves re ectionthe time for information to be absorbed;
observation—the act of taking in the behavior of individuals, groups, and
environments; experiencethe collection of activities where participation
builds knowledge; and reasoningthe thoughts that make sense of infor-
mation as it applies in any given situation.
