Chapter 13: Accessories
By de nition, accessories are nonessential items. In the fashion industry
today, however, the status of accessories often rivals the importance of the
garments themselves. Designers have several options when it comes to
building accessories into the overall look of a collection. The styling option
is to purchase or borrow from companies designing and producing accessory
collections that complement their work. The licensing option is to partner with
companies that will design and produce accessory collections speci cally for
their design collections. The in-house option is to design and produce acces-
sory collections themselves.
Although accessories are decorative, they can also serve a functional purpose. Practically,
hats and scarves can keep the wearers warm, gloves protect their hands, belts hold up their
pants, and bags carry their personal belongings. Accessories that boast designer labels, such
as handbags and sunglasses, have a prestige factor and provide the status-conscious with a
more affordable option for suggesting membership in a particular lifestyle. Accessories can
also telegraph an association with a speci c religious or cultural body. Religious symbols are
incorporated into fashion most often in the form of jewelry or headwear. Accessories, especially
footwear and headgear, complete the look of many subcultures and can convey  ne distinctions

they are telling in their collection.
