The combination of parts that makes a project feel whole.
Unity refers to the combination of all the elements of a design successfully working together in a cohesive way. Although it is often equated with harmony (which means agreement or accord), unity is a separate notion; it is considered the underlying principle that sums up all the cohesive elements of a design project. In an interior, one of the goals of a design is to attempt to bring together the many elements of a project in a coherent and consistent design statement—in other words, to achieve a sense of unity.
There are two types of unity in design
Visual Create unity through the use of contrast, alignment, and repetition. Some examples may include the alignment of elements or the consistent use of color throughout a project.
Conceptual Unify a design by using a specific idea or theme. For example, a project may be framed around a concept of lightness or nature.
However, deploying variety within a unifying composition creates visual and spatial relief, whether it is a unique shape or form, a contrasting color, or varying patterns or textures. Ultimately, a project succeeds when the furniture, lighting, wall treatment, and accessories come together in a unifying way that is pleasing to the user. Unity leads to order and organization, and should ultimately hold together a design visually and conceptually. At key points in the process, designers should take a step back, consult with colleagues, and evaluate the design.
