Strategic placement of mirrors in a home (or in other spaces) can reflect a view and contribute to expansive site lines through a space.

Sight lines are an important consideration in interior design. Loosely defined as the implied line connecting the viewer and the subject of their interest, sight lines function as an active tool for navigation and comprehension of a space.

Sight lines are a vital part of the planning process for the design of civic structures, such as auditoriums, stadiums, or theaters. They aid in determining the configuration of seating and allow spectators to see all areas of a playing field or theater stage; sight lines also provide visual access for passive safety and security. An important consideration in this type of project is that of the “C-value,” which is defined as the vertical distance from the viewer’s eyes to the sight line of the viewer directly behind, which ultimately defines the rake, or upward slope of the seating.

In many projects, the idea of a view corridor—a line of sight between an active observer and their final destination or object located at a distance—is critical for implied movement within a space. Sight lines are useful in wayfinding by providing clear landmarks within a design, and give the navigator a more expansive view to move in a particular direction. In an exhibition or museum context, sight lines provide information about what’s ahead to complement and enhance the narratives of exhibit or display.

In a residence, visual connections from one space to another can enhance flow, and provide a sense of openness and accessibility. Creating broad sight lines from kitchen spaces into living areas and dining rooms is a common planning tactic in residential design. Double-height spaces or clerestory windows increase vertical sight lines and allow more light. Private spaces, such as bedrooms and bathrooms, do not require the same level of accessibility.
