07 Aperture

An opening or gap in a surface.

Apertures are the moments in a design where openings occur, where light passes through glass, and how air circulates in a space. Traditionally thought of as having functional value, a door to get into another space (or to close off access), a window to allow light and exterior environments into the space, or empty openings in both horizontal or vertical surfaces allow for visual access to other spaces.

The depth and material of an aperture can affect the perception of what is beyond an opening. A regular stud wall is too slight to elicit a physical response when you pass through it, but a knife edge detail or a much thicker wall assembly registers with the body’s movement.

Apertures in exterior walls were historically tied to climatic conditions, as an opening in a wall compromised the heating or cooling necessary. Deep apertures for daylight modulate the way light enters a room, and can provide protection and shade on a bright day. Prior to the invention of glazing and heat-gain protection, apertures were minimized to keep heat out, and wall thickness was integral to staying cool or moderating the interior temperature.

In addition to wall openings, openings in ceilings and floors can create dramatic double-height spaces and skylit conditions. These are just some of the creative ways to use the additional surfaces of a project, and allow for visual and aural connection to adjacent spaces.
