Chapter 6. Monetization – Ramblin' Rover, Part 4

Making and playing your own video games is definitely fun. But what really sets the pros apart from the hobbyists? There are a lot of hobbyists out there with talent that rivals the highest echelons of the professional ranks. But by definition, the difference between a pro and a hobbyist is income...money...moolah...da cabbage.

Separating a customer from their money

In this day where there are a ton of great games out there at no cost with (previously said) amazing hobbyist developers, how can you get a customer to pay you money for an experience they may get for free? It comes down to a few basic philosophies.

Free game, or paid game?

This is probably the toughest way to make money...by actually charging for the game itself. If you're coming straight out of the gate with your first game... this is not really an advisable way to go. There are exceptions to that rule (for instance, you feel sooo strongly that you have a ground-breaking new game that everyone will want to play). But in general, customers will avoid games from indie developers that cost money. So IF you ever do a paid game... you may want to make a light version of it as a demo that people can play to bait the hook for a paid game.

To have ads, or not to have ads?

Ads are a pretty good way to earn some money, especially if your game is free. We'll be using this model in Ramblin' Rover. You really have to be careful with this model, though. It's far too easy to go overboard and annoy your players to the point of no longer wanting to play your game (and possibly give you a bad rating - which will pretty much kill your game distribution). Ads come from third-party providers, but are placed within the Buildbox interface with just a few clicks. Some ads are paid by click, and some by impression, and others are a balance of both. Don't know what any of that means? Don't worry... we'll get into it in just a moment.

Coin store

As you know, we set up our two upgraded rovers so that they cost in-game currency. There's two ways to acquire these coins. Obviously, one way is picking up the ones we placed in the game. But, players could also choose to purchase coins with real money to get rovers without grinding in the game. Other perks can also be purchased through this store (including unlocking potential maps, and even turning off advertising for a fee)!
