Worrell Design recently created New: For Lateral Thinkers to tell stories of design and innovation from around the world.
“Our vision is to raise awareness of global concerns that affect the design of business and the new roles of designers,
says Kai Worrell. “We want to be recognized as a thought leader. We want people to be able to gain from the valuable
insights we have uncovered as a company over the past three decades.
With eye-catching, colorful graphics
and rich, meaningful collages of
images pertaining to the articles,
Worrell Design wants readers to be
able to flip through the magazine and
get a quick sense of the depth of the
material, while creating a cohesive
visual impact.
Every issue begins with a Founder’s
Note from Robert Worrell, followed by
up to three interviews. The first issue
included James McGregor, author;
Joe Ranieri, chief executive officer of
Crocs China; and Yu Shen, secretary-
general of Shanghai Design Center.
Each issue also includes case studies
and articles written by Worrell Design
research specialists.
Approximately 1,500 magazines were
printed for the first issue. “We mailed
and labeled the magazines in custom
envelopes designed exclusively for
that particular issue,” Kai Worrell says.
And the response?
“People were incredibly impressed
by the relevant, third-party content
and overall quality,” Worrell says.
“They expressed appreciation for
the knowledge we not only gathered
and shared from third-party experts
but from the direct information
compounded from Worrell Design
researchers and designers.

Self-Promotions
IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT
No one can afford to send out
multiple portfolio pieces throughout
the year. Nor do you want to. Rather,
consider accenting your portfolio with
over-the-top creative self-promotions
that really grab the recipients’
attention.
By coordinating a “wow” moment with
each self-promotion piece you create,
you can dramatically enhance your
portfolio strategy.
This self-promotion was wrapped around
America’s favorite pastime—baseball and hot
dogs. The gift included an invitation, along
with a nicely designed package of ketchup,
mustard, and relish. Rome & Gold Creative
also rented a suite at the local A farm team
stadium and invited everyone out for a fun,
casual evening of baseball, allowing them to
strengthen their current relationships and to
develop new ones.

Based on the attraction and seduction
of good branding, Rome & Gold creative
developed a refrigerator magnet kit that served
as a novelty gift for the recipients. The magnets
had branding and seductive words such as
flaming, kinky, sweaty, and cuddle on them.

mailers are such a worthwhile effort.
Any significant holiday, and even the
insignificant ones, offer an opportunity
to show your passion, creativity, and
thinking,” says Aaron Keller, managing

represent times of the year when mail
has a better chance of being opened,
considered, and perhaps even saved.
But don’t go down the holiday mailer
chimney unless you have the talent to
get your piece noticed and opened; you
might find yourself stuck with a big bill
and not much recognition to show for it.

“Some assembly required” is annoying
on Christmas morning, but a welcome
distraction in your office mailbox. This
promotional mailer packed a promise to
amuse, entertain, and for some, challenge.

Seasonality can be a great technique
when it comes to self-promotions. These
seasonal coasters were designed and printed
via letterpress as self-promotional materials.
They were sent out to clients on a quarterly
basis. They also serve as leave-behinds after
each portfolio presentation.
