11 Using Basic Shapes as Aid in Difficult Drawings

There is no substitute for good drawing. The logical approach to good drawing is to rely on basic shapes. Most of the problems that come up are when a character or a piece of that character moves far enough so it cannot be inbetweened — it has to be actually drawn. All of a sudden here is a hand that has to be drawn…from scratch! No model! No hand ever got into that position, or an ear, or a tail, or hair. The extremes were easy poses to draw but the inbetweens are impossible.
