Modeling the Hair

Modeling hair is very complex and there are a lot of ways to create it, each one of them producing different results. For example, you can model it with flat surfaces, each one of them representing a lock of hair, perhaps with a hair texture applied to them. Another option, which is the most realistic, is to use locks of hair: you select the areas of the head that you want to have hair, and Blender will generate hair that you’ll be able to comb, cut, and style. After that, you can even simulate the effects of gravity or wind on it. That’s a pretty complex operation, though (and it requires a powerful computer as well). In this case, you’ll be creating a mesh hair, which is basically modeling the hair shapes manually and adapting the meshes to the character’s hair style.

Tip

In 3D, there is a situation that almost represents a rule: if it won’t be seen, don’t create it! For example, if Jim is always going to wear a cap, why should you create the hair under the cap if it can’t be seen? We’ll be creating Jim’s hair in this section, but we’ll only be focusing on the parts of it that will be seen.
