The measurement, properties, and relationships of points, lines, angles, surfaces, and solids to each other.
The word geometry comes from the ancient Greek root words geo meaning earth and metron, meaning measurement, and is one of the oldest branches of mathematics. As applied to interior design, it is primarily concerned with the properties of space related to distance, shape, size, and position of objects or figures. Geometry also has similar connections with art, architecture, and graphic design.
In interiors, math and, in particular, geometry are important for several of the specialties a designer is expected to be knowledgeable about calculation of area to specify materials like flooring, drapery, and upholstery; understanding volume and three-dimensional properties, including height, width, and depth; the measurement and relationship of elements based on angles; the synchronization and establishment of patterns and themes within a space; space planning and room layout; and the placement of furniture and decor based on the size and shape of each element.
Sacred geometry is based on symbolic and sacred attributes given to specific geometric shapes and proportions with the belief that a deity is the geometer of the world. Sacred geometry is often used in the design of religious spaces like churches, temples, and mosques, as seen in early Moroccan architecture.
