Understanding what a benefit is . . . and isn’t
Understanding the Business Case in PRINCE2 hinges on a single word. That word is justification. A focus on justification gets you away from thinking solely about benefits, which is a common point of confusion. While most projects are indeed justified by the business benefits that will result from them, some are not and need other types of justification. For example, the project may not lead to any business benefits at all, but may still be fully justified because it’s necessary for legal compliance or because it’s being carried out as an instruction from headquarters.
The Business Case is particularly important in PRINCE2, because the business focus is the primary emphasis in the method. The good news when you’re revising is that while there are one or two tangles to work through, overall the theme shouldn’t cause you much difficulty. The Business Case theme still has a fair amount of content though, so be careful to allow plenty of time for revising it before the exams.
