How can you tell the difference?

When looking at settings inside the Group Policy Management Editor, you can quickly tell the difference between a real policy setting that will self-regulate itself off the machine when the GPO stops applying, and those other preference settings that stick around on the machine even after the GPO disappears. Inside GPME, the managed policy settings are designated by little icons that look like pieces of paper, like a little checklist. The weaker preference settings are instead designated by icons that are the same little pieces of paper, with a prominent down arrow sitting on top of the paper. This can be a quick reference for you to determine which settings will behave in each way. The following is a screenshot with a list of Administrative Template policy settings that shows a mix of managed and unmanaged settings:
