Environment variables

Another configuration you may find yourself needing to push out to client computers are Environment variables. Many applications utilize Environment variables in order to perform certain actions, and you can easily make use of Group Policy to put those variables into place. Once again, this preference is one that you can tag onto Computer Configuration, or User Configuration. Here are the locations inside GPME:

  • Computer Configuration | Preferences | Windows Settings | Environment
  • User Configuration | Preferences | Windows Settings | Environment

After navigating to the Environment section, right-click and choose to create a New | Environment Variable. Here you simply specify CRUD, whether this is a User Variable or System Variable, and then the Name and Value of the variable. One of the common environment variables for companies to modify is the PATH variable. For example, if I wanted to make sure that a custom directory was included in my PATH variable on my workstations, I could specify it here:
