Filtering settings

While searching for criteria about the GPOs is helpful, searching for criteria inside of GPOs is even better. There is an ability to hone in on particular settings within a GPO. This is really more akin to filtering than it is to searching, but is still useful. This is probably the most powerful search function inside Group Policy, because GPO settings is a vast wilderness that contains thousands and thousands of possibilities. Rather than resorting to an online search engine, let's find out what results can be obtained by using the built-in filtering capabilities.

It is important to note that filtering settings within a GPO only works for Administrative Templates. It's a bummer that this same capability is not ported over to Software Settings or Windows Settings, but alas I guess we will take what we can get.

Filtering for Computer Configuration and User Configuration will be separate entities. If you create a filter inside Computer Configuration so that its Administrative Templates are only showing you filtered results, moving over to the User Configuration will not be filtered in any way, unless you configure a second filter inside that node.

To get started with creating a filter, edit one of your GPOs. Once inside GPME, navigate to the Policies folder of either Computer Configuration or User Configuration, and then right-click on your Administrative Templates folder in order to select Filter Options...:
