User Account Control – Detecting Application Installations and Prompting for Elevation

Here, we can specify whether UAC prompts when application installers are launched. By default, it does prompt in this scenario, but there are some cases where you may want to disable this piece of UAC. By disabling only the installer-initiated prompt, you would continue to receive UAC prompts when a user tried to open an administrative window. This option is useful in cases where you are using some kind of software-push technology that attempts to install software onto the computers from a centralized location. You would not want UAC blocking this automated process from installing corporate-sanctioned software, so perhaps this UAC Group Policy setting could be used to allow those installers to be successful.

What is a little bit funny on this setting is that what UAC really watches for is executable files that start with setu, instal, or update. It is not really a smart logic that blocks all installers, but simply watches for appropriately-named files that signify installer or update packages. Malware does not typically take the approach of naming their files with these words, so while this is a good option to assist with software package pushes, relying on UAC to block all software installations is not foolproof.
