Preparing to leave


The biggest challenge for leaders isn't crafting a beautiful strategy
or compelling vision; it's changing the way people think and how
they behave — culture.


This is why so many ‘culture change’ efforts fail. It's really hard to design and even harder to execute, and it's harder still to make it stick. There is lots of guidance available for leading attitude and behaviour change, but I reckon the critical points are: (a) people must own the change from the beginning and understand ‘why’; (b) you need a team around you who believe it as much as you do; (c) get rid of ‘friction’, such as outdated processes, as they'll just hold the change back; and (d) listen to your people and understand the change from their perspective.
