Here’s a basic overview of some of the benefits you can obtain through military service:
• Under the older Montgomery GI Bill, military personnel could receive nearly $50,000 for college.
• Under the alternative Post-9/11 GI Bill, military personnel can have 100 percent of their tuition and fees paid (up to certain state maximums).
• The Yellow Ribbon program is a partnership between the Veterans Administration and certain schools. Under the Yellow Ribbon program, expenses not covered under the Post-9/11 GI Bill might be waived by participating schools, and the VA will match any tuition discount given to a veteran by the school. A full list of participating schools can be found at
www.gibill.va.gov.
• Graduate students (medical, dental, psychological, nursing, and veterinary), who apply prior to attending grad school, may be selected to have all of their educational costs at any U.S. college paid for in return for military service after graduation. Additionally, they can receive more than $1,000 per month in spending money throughout graduate school.
• Law and seminary students who commit to military service can have their degrees paid for.
• Military personnel can qualify to have classes waived at civilian colleges, based on their military experience.
• Reservistsand certain family members might be eligible for benefits as well.
