UPromise Could Be Worth $500 per Year!

As I was writing this book, I received an e-mail advertisement from UPromise stating that the average household using UPromise was earning $443.25 per year in tuition rewards. Frankly, I think this number is a tad low, with the average being thrown off by families who have signed up but aren’t using the program. In reality, a family who heavily uses the UPromise account can very easily rack up $500 to $1,000 annually.
Such a high amount is possible because, to a large degree, UPromise was the first major player in the tuition rewards game. Further, after a good run on its own, it was snapped up by student loan giant Sallie Mae, leaving most major retailers clamoring to participate. To this day, it remains a free program, with Sallie Mae making its money by taking a slice of the tuition rewards that companies send your way.

CHEAT SHEET
One of the best-kept secrets about the UPromise program is that you don’t even need to be a current or future student to use the program. In reality, anyone can sign up for the program, even naming herself as the beneficiary of the account.
At the heart of the UPromise program are its vast partnerships, with more than 22,000 grocery stores, 8,000 restaurants, 700 of the Web’s largest shopping sites, and a wide variety of specialty retailers and service professionals. When money is spent with any of UPromise’s partners using a registered credit or debit card (from any bank), a contribution ranging from 1 to 25 percent is made to your child’s UPromise account.
Here’s a small sampling of some UPromise partners that will reward you with tuition when you shop:
Grocery and drug stores—Kroger, Ralphs, Vons, Pavilions, Food4Less, Albertsons, CVS, A&P, Wegman’s, Kings, Brookshires, and ShopRite
Online shopping—Apple, Old Navy, Gap, Target, Macy’s, PETCO, Victoria’s Secret, Office Max, Office Depot, and L.L. Bean
Travel—Orbitz.com, Travelocity.com, Southwest Airlines, Marriot, Avis rental cars, and Budget rental cars
Other services—Century21 Real Estate, ExxonMobil Gas stations, Sprint, XM satellite radio, and TurboTax
Obviously, none of the following tips and tricks will do you any good if you don’t visit UPromise.com and sign up, so make that your first task after you finish this chapter. Aside from that, here are some of the tips and tricks the smartest parents and students have used to max out their rewards:
Register every card you have—One of the mistakes many parents make is not registering every card they have, especially if spouses or partners have different card numbers. You also need to be sure to register new cards that replace your expired cards, so your earnings don’t grind to a halt.
Plan seasonal shopping—Some of the biggest opportunities to earn tuition through UPromise come around the holidays and when it is time to update wardrobes. By planning ahead and deliberately shopping online, instead of casually at the mall, you can put an extra few hundred dollars per year into your UPromise account.
Use the restaurant.com partnership—Because you’re already looking to trim some expenditures from your budget, UPromise offers you a great opportunity to do it while also padding your rewards account. Restaurant.com lets you buy gift certificates for local restaurants at a substantial discount (that is, a $25 gift certificate for just $10) while also earning tuition on your purchase.
Hang around the UPromise forums—If you think I’m smart, you should check out the UPromise junkies hanging around the UPromise user forums. They’ll keep you on top of every new savings opportunity and need-to-know piece of fine print.
