2 8 0 THE FASHION DESIGN REFERENCE + SPECIFICATION BOOK
(Text)
You are the head of the textile and fashion arts department at the Museum of Fine
Arts, Boston. What makes fashion collectible?
Museum curators acquire works for their collections based on the collecting policy
of that institution. An art museum might focus on works that are examples of good
design, reflect important trends in design and society, or are key examples of a spe-
cific designer’s work. A historical society might focus on costume and textiles that
were worn, used, or made in the specific community. Each museum will have differ-
ent criteria for collecting; however, all acquisitions should be in good condition and
be exhibitable.
What advice would you give a designer about researching and using
museum collections?
Be specific. Know what you want to look at and why. Don’t be afraid to contact the
curator and discuss your project. If the curator is a good one, they will be the person
most knowledgeable about the collection and be able to assist you in selecting the
most appropriate pieces. And maybe they will introduce you to objects in the collec-
tion you didn’t know you wanted to see.
Why do you believe that collectors and museums are now taking fashion
more seriously?
There is a growing understanding in academia that fashion, clothing, and textiles
were and continue to be important forces in society. More scholars are examining
the social, cultural, economic, and historic roles of these objects. As the under-
standing of textiles and dress increases, so, too, does the appreciation of these col-
lections. They will play increasingly important roles within museums and academia.
Which resources should be a part of every designer’s reference library?
Anything that you find inspiring.
