This chapter provides details on the Back to the Future open world. This world’s gateway is found on the lower-right level of Vorton.

Areas to Explore

When you arrive in Hill Valley 1985 (Figure 21.1), you find yourself high up on top of the MAXOM building, looking down onto the town’s streets. (Note the ladders that allow you to return to the top of the building if you don’t have a flying character.) In this town are two special accelerator switches you can use to travel back in time to 1885 or forward to 2015. Be aware that only the DeLorean or Doc Brown’s time-traveling train engine can travel back or forward in time, so be sure to bring one of those vehicles along—you’ll have to play through the Back to the Future Bonus Story Mode to access the build instructions for the DeLorean, so refer to Chapter 31 for that bonus level walkthrough.

FIGURE 21.1 Hill Valley, circa 1985, is a pleasant little town to visit.

Jump down to the town streets and look around. There’s a small park in the middle of town, surrounded by various buildings you can explore. The town has a movie theater, a gas station, a barber shop, a candy shop, and much more.

As you explore the town, keep an eye open for areas that are in need of repair or upgrade. Check out the construction happening on a new major highway behind City Hall, as well as the back alleys.

When you’re finished exploring Hill Valley 1985, get in the DeLorean or Doc Brown’s train engine and drive onto the accelerator switch located in front of the MAXOM building (Figure 21.2) and hit 88mph to get launched into the future: Hill Valley 2015!

Much has changed by 2015, so explore again—and be sure to hunt down areas that need repairs or upgrades. You’ll definitely want to pay a visit to the movie theater for a fun holographic upgrade (Figure 21.3).

The accelerator switch on the grass to the left of City Hall (Figure 21.4) can take you back to the past—to Hill Valley 1885.

Tip: Driving Versus Flying

Having a character who can fly will speed up your Hill Valley explorations a bit, but keep in mind that you can upgrade the DeLorean (as well as any other vehicles you might own) with some added speed that will help you cover ground much faster. With a well-timed jump, you can also hitch a ride on a flying car and get a tour of the city as it flies around. And you can also get a ride on the train in 1885.

Locations to Repair/Upgrade

You can repair or upgrade 10 areas in Hill Valley—but they’re not all in the same time period:

Image Restore the present-day Hill Valley sign (1985)—For 5,000 studs, you can rebuild the town sign. Behind the sign, find the glass box and have Marty break it open with his guitar (X) for some bonus blue studs. And be sure to give the new sign a few hits to find some hidden studs.

Image Fund the dig site (1985)—An archaeology crew could sure use 35,000 studs to get their dig site prepared. Once it’s restored, you can use a character (such as Scooby-Doo) to do some digging. There’s a blue power pad that might be useful at some point.

Image Unlock the jukebox (1885, 1985, and 2015)—The Jukebox is available in all three time periods for a cost of 25,000 studs. You can use it to change your background music (X).

Image Restore the cinema hologram (2015 world)—For just 10,000 studs, you can fix the holographic sign for Bruce 19 on the movie theater.

Image Restore the future’s Hill Valley sign (2015)—This repair costs 5,000 studs.

Image Repair the clock (1885)—This repair costs a lot of studs—70,000!—but it’s worth it because the clock is needed in 1955 for Marty and Doc to be able to send Marty back to the future!

Image Build the past’s Hill Valley sign (1885)—The past is expensive! Repairing the town sign in 1885 costs 50,000 studs!

Image Restore the train station (1885)—This is another expensive repair! Rebuilding the train station costs 70,000 studs.

Available Quests

Five quests are offered in this world—two in the past and three in the future:

Image Go shopping for Marlene McFly (2015)—Marlene would rather spend time with her boyfriend than do grandma’s shopping. Help her locate three items, and you get a gold brick.

Image Find the lost dog (2015)—Doc Brown (Figure 21.5) has lost his dog, Einstein. Help find him for a gold brick.

Image Help Marty McFly Jr. (2015)—Marty Jr. needs to be escorted back to his dad, so follow him and fight off any goons that attack. A gold brick is yours for your help.

Image Rid the town of Mad Dog and his men (1885)—Mad Dog and his men are causing trouble in town. Go out and run all 15 of them out of town, and then defeat Mad Dog. Get a gold brick for your work.

Image Telescope repair (1885)—Help Doc Brown hunt down the parts needed to repair a telescope for his wife, Clara. Finding all three parts gets you a gold brick.

Don’t Miss

With three different time periods to visit, there are a lot of hidden secrets and fun locations to hunt down. These are just a few to be on the lookout for:

Image Hoverboard park (2015)—In 2015, all the cool kids own hoverboards. Take Marty’s hoverboard for a spin at the hoverboard park behind the MAXOM building. Using the boost pads, you can really get some speed (Figure 21.6).

Image Beneath the town (1885)—Another great place to visit is below Hill Valley. With a vehicle, you can find a series of boost pads that allow you to get down beneath Hill Valley for some hidden studs and surprises.

Image The dig site (1885, 1985, and 2015)—There’s an interesting site to the left of City Hall that you should visit in all three time periods. (You need a character who can dig.) There’s a Chroma puzzle to solve, too.
