This chapter provides details on the Portal 2 world. This world’s gateway is found on the upper-right platform of Vorton.
Unlike many of the other worlds in LEGO Dimensions, the Portal 2 world consists of a single area called Aperture Science. Aperture Science is the home of GLaDOS, an artificial intelligence being with questionable motives. She and her assistant, Wheatley, monitor the activities that go on at Aperture Science. You’ll find Wheatley much more helpful than GLaDOS, although he can be a bit wordy, and sometimes his help is anything but helpful.
Aperture Science (Figure 27.1) sustained some serious damage when Lord Vortech attempted to merge the LEGO worlds, and a number of areas don’t work properly. Many of them you can repair or upgrade, but in order to reach others you must find alternative pathways. You can find many interesting areas as you wander around after exiting the gateway. Chell’s Portal Gun is an absolute requirement for many of this world’s puzzles, but having a character who can fly is also extremely useful.
GLaDOS’s chamber (Figure 27.2), for example, greets you when you arrive. GLaDOS may be stuck here in the chamber, but she manages to keep an eye on your activities no matter where you go.
A number of test chambers here require the Portal Gun, and many also require other characters and abilities that Chell does not possess. Test Chamber 02, for example, has a gold brick waiting for you, but you need the Unikitty minifig to get it.
Be sure to look for the waiting room and the Bring Your Daughter to Work Day projects area, where you can collect a lot of studs if you’re feeling destructive.
Aperture Science can be a confusing world to explore. There are plenty of dead ends and walkways that go up and down and end abruptly. Be careful as you explore; a misstep can send you falling and losing studs. As you explore, be on the lookout for the following areas, which are in need of repair and upgrade:
Restore the relaxation chamber—For 35,000 studs, you can repair the relaxation chamber (Figure 27.3) and jump across to find some blue studs. Be sure to relax.
Unlock the jukebox—For 25,000 studs, Wheatley gets you access to the jukebox so you can change the background music.
Restore the portrait room—GLaDOS kindly requests that you pay 45,000 studs to repair the portrait room. Find a way to look behind the large portrait for a surprise.
Restore the science project stands—It costs you only 50,000 studs to restore the Bring Your Daughter to Work Day projects (Figure 27.4).
Restore the turret control room—The turret control room is an important facility. GLaDOS requests that you pay 30,000 studs to recover it.
Restore the choir room—Why GLaDOS needs a choir room is unknown, but feel free to chip in 40,000 studs to return it to Aperture Science.
Tip: Computers Provide Lots of Studs
Computer equipment costs a lot of money, so be sure to destroy as much of it as you can. Anything that looks expensive in this world has a tendency to provide a lot of gold studs.
There are only a few quests for you in the Portal 2 world, but they’re important ones:
Bake a cake—GLaDOS said there’s no cake, but if you have the correct ingredients, Cake Core helps you bake one (Figure 27.5)!
One job—Wheatley’s got a job for you. He needs three boxes placed in particular spots. He doesn’t have hands and is prepared to reward you a gold brick if you can help him with this in Test Chamber 03.
Extinct species—Cave Johnson wants to pit you against 30 Mantis Men. Fight them off and make a glorious contribution to science. Get a gold brick for doing it.
Collection services—GLaDOS wants to send you on a scavenger hunt. Collect 10 spheres scattered all over Aperture Science; use the flashing red dots on the map for help in finding all of them. Then return to GLaDOS for a reward.
Two jobs—Find three of Wheatley’s little boxes (Figure 27.6), which are scattered all over Aperture Science and need to be found. A gold brick is your reward if you can locate all of them.
What else is going on in Portal 2? There are a number of hidden areas and many secrets to be found in this world. As you explore, make certain to pay visits to the following:
(Back to the) Future Aperture Labs—After exiting the gateway into the Portal 2 world, head left (clockwise) and enter the first doorway to find a special time machine accelerator switch that can be used only with Doc Brown’s DeLorean. If you have the right characters, solve the tricky test chamber puzzle and get a reward.
The surface—Whereas most of the other worlds have an ocean or lakes to explore, the Portal 2 world has a grassy surface up above to explore. A gold brick is yours for hitting all five scarecrows. Be sure to return to the barn when you’re done so you can head back down (Figure 27.7).
Power cells—On one of the outer areas of Aperture Science you can find three empty power cells. Using a flying vehicle, lift the three batteries that are located nearby and drop them in place for a gold brick.
Hacking Puzzle—If you have the Doctor Who minifig, you can solve a special puzzle in the waiting room. Move The Doctor around and collect the five red discs while avoiding your enemies; you can press A to jump hard to make them change direction.
Next, you’re off to see the wizard. The Wizard of Oz, that is. You’ll find a unique world to explore—a land filled with color and danger above and the colorless Kansas (complete with tornado) below. Munchkin Town is a great place to start, so once you arrive... just follow the yellow brick road.
