Planning a Trip with the Travel App

The Travel app provides information on different destinations around the world, so you can use it as a travel planner to find information and make arrangements for your next trip. You can read articles and view still and panoramic photos about different cities and other vacation spots around the world. You can also search for a specific location if you already know where you want to go. From there, you can get details on airports, hotels, and restaurants, and even book your air travel and make your hotel reservations with the help of the app. This task explains how to plan your next trip using the Travel app.

1 Open the Travel app: Open the Travel app by clicking its Start screen tile.

2 View app: The travel app opens to reveal the featured destination.

3 Search for your destination: Move your mouse to the lower-right hot corner to display the Charms bar. Click the Search charm. In the search field, type the name of your destination, such as Rome. Under the search field, Rome, Italy, appears as the suggested destination. Click the result for Rome, Italy.

4 View information on destination: The app displays details on Rome. Click anywhere on the screen to turn off the search bar. Scroll to the right to see the introduction, a map, currency information, and a link to book a flight.

5 Find flights: Click Find Flights. In the Flights box, click in the From field. The first time you do this, the app asks if you want to turn on location services and allow Travel to use your location. If you are comfortable turning on location services, click Allow.

6 Fill out flight information: In the From field, click the round icon to let the app consider all airports in and around your vicinity, or delete the suggestion and type the name or code for your closest airport. Then select the name of the airport that matches your name or code. Type a departure date, return date, cabin type, and number of passengers. Click Search Flights.

7 View flight information: A flight information screen appears showing you all the flights matching your dates, along with ticket price, airline, departure and arrival times, flight duration, and number of stopovers.

8 Choose a flight: Click on a specific flight to view more details.

9 Book the flight: Click the Book button if you want to book the flight, which you can do online through the website of the airline or a third-party travel partner. Select the airline or travel partner.

10 Book the flight online: Internet Explorer opens for you to book the flight.

11 Return to the Travel app: Move your mouse to the upper-left hot corner of the screen and click on the thumbnail for the Travel app to return to the app. Click the Back button to return to each previous screen until you reach the information page on Rome.

12 View hotels section: Scroll to the right past the photos, panoramas, and attractions until you see the Hotels section. Click Find Hotels.

13 Fill out hotel information: Type the check-in and check-out dates, the number of rooms, and the number of guests. Click Search Hotels.

14 View hotel information: A hotel information screen appears showing you all the suggested hotels matching your dates, along with price, rating, and amenities.

15 Choose a hotel: Click on a specific hotel to view more details. Another screen opens to display a description of the hotel, a map of its location, and photos. Click Book if you want to make a reservation, which you can do online through a third-party website. Select the third-party website.

16 Book the hotel room online: Internet Explorer then opens for you to book the hotel room.
