SpreAD 1 I thought this was a really nice piece of
profile writing about an artist who not a lot of people
have heard of, but has had a considerable impact on
the New York art scene. It’s told with a nice balance
of reverence, affection, and information. Plus, I love
the color scheme of the photo and the cropping that
features her hands. A nice package all around.
SpreAD 2 I love this spread, less for the writing
than for the sheer information organization and de-
livery. It’s probably one of the most intricate graphics
we’ve ever run, and even though it’s extremely busy,
the information is presented in such a clear way that
you have no trouble figuring out the main message
and the connections of each designer.
SpreAD 3 This is the first story I assigned as editor-
in-chief of Print, and it was somewhat of an ambitious
topic for us. I really wanted to focus on design as
something bigger and broader than just ink on paper
or products or websites. I wanted to display it as
the thread that weaves myriad disciplines together.
Showcasing baseball player Tim Lincecum’s pitch-
ing motion as a designed thing was just too good to
pass up, especially for the “Movement” issue. Angela
Riechers’ writing is superb here; she keeps the focus
on Lincecum but manages to connect all the right
design dots, so the reader never feels like the topic
is a stretch for Print magazine. And the graphics are
perfect as well. Probably my favorite story package
so far at Print.
SpreAD 4 I admit I chose this one more for its
visual impact than its writing.
SpreAD 5 This is just a fun piece for me. I love the
contrast between the serious and technical writing of
Paul Shaw and the whimsical commentary of Stephen
Coles. This is a fairly new column and the writers
haven’t quite hit their stride in working together, so
when we got the first draft, Paul had written so much
copy that Stephen didn’t have anywhere to play. So,
instead of featuring just one of them, which we didn’t
want to do (the department is called “Stereotype”
after all), we had the idea that Stephen would com-
ment on Paul’s thoughts. We didn’t realize it would
be so funny and lighthearted, but it is and I think it
works really well.
