Paula Scher is always augmenting accepted form, busting conven-
tion, shifting shape, subverting style, and challenging perceptions.
A clever writer with a talent for turning a phrase rather than only
writing in a conventional manner, she incorporates her texts with
images through typographic and lettering compositions designed
to grab attention. Sometimes she uses type: “The 50 Ways I
procrastinated…before designing this page” is a satiric essay
by any other name. Other times she applies her handwriting
and handwritten lettering.
“All the News That Fits,” a visual/text essay for Print magazine, is a
serious commentary on “the tone and tenor of the news” produced in
a diary or sketchbook form. Through a collection of generic headlines
during the year 2001, hand-scrawled along a timeline, Scher reveals
that the top stories of the day were always held together by a diet of
sex and scandal, until the events of 9/11, when precipitously, and for
the following year, the underpinning was terror, until 2003 when
war filled the pages.
Scher’s concept could easily have been written as a narrative, but
it would have lost the impact. The aggressive nature of the writing
combined with the violent use of colored pencil is a barometer for
the various emotions stirred by news in the post-9/11 period.
