344 Questions began with a column Stefan Bucher wrote and
illustrated titled “ink & circumstance” for Step inside design magazine.
The intention was to air aspects of design and illustration that
Bucher believed were ignored in design discourse—the emotional
side of the business and of the work itself. He admits that the
column was “me standing on the porch, shooting off my mouth.
Muttering, grumbling, ranting. I didn’t know if anybody else
cared about this stuff, or if I was alone in my opinions.” Hence,
he made the format of this handwritten column as engaging as
possible—“to lure you in, and to give you something to enjoy
even if you thought I was completely off base with my argument.”
In his first book, All Access, Bucher had started a process
of questioning what it means to be a designer. His second
book, 344 Questions, was a way to put it all together as helpful
notions and countertop wisdom aimed at creative people who
are trying to figure out their lives. The book is indeed small
enough to carry everywhere, and since it costs less than $10,
“you don’t have to worry about messing it up,” he insists.
“In fact, it’ll look better messed up than clean.”
Some of the questions are arranged to build little rhythms,
but for the most part, Bucher wanted the book to feel like
a candid conversation. “As an immigrant I sometimes go
overboard with the language, trying to show off. I worked
hard not to do that here. It would’ve been malapropos, unger-
mane —deleterious even!”
Bucher says he is a hermit and a crank, “so thoughts are
constantly swirling around my head.” Every other month, he
would just write about the thing that was most on his mind.
In terms of both the writing and the illustration, making
“ink & circumstance” and then 344 Questions was “like holding
a stick into a cotton candy maker.”
