Before You Reached Here ...
You have built the event list in Chapter 1.8 Identifying Events. It includes:
9. New agency wants to do business NEW AGENCY (IN)
You also have built a current physical data flow diagram and its data dictionary. They contain enough information for you to build a first-cut model of the response to this event.
Easiest: You should already be familiar with the material from Chapter 2.11 Event-Response Models.
More Difficult and Most Difficult: You are managing to stay upright on this trail, so keep going. Pay particular attention to the advice given under the “Your Strategy” heading below.
Promenade: If you are following this trail, but have worked through the last few chapters in Section 1, you really should consider a permanent change in trails. However, if the book just opened randomly to this page and you really want to rejoin the Promenade Trail, Chapter 2.10 Essential Viewpoint is a very good place to do so.
We want you to build an event-response process model for the current physical response to event 9 New agency wants to do business. Your model should include all of the processes that are part of the current system’s response to the event. Make sure that each process has all the data that it needs to do its job. Use the necessary current physical data stores in this model.
Note that we are suggesting you build this first Piccadilly event-response model in two stages. In the first stage, concern yourself only with the current system’s response to the event. Do not worry about refining it or turning it into an essential model yet. The second stage comes in Chapter 1.10 Refining an Event-Response, when you will refine your event-response process model by eliminating the implementation-dependent processes and replacing the physical stores with their logical equivalents.
We will review the models after each stage. However, if you feel that essential event-response modeling holds no dangers for you, you may build the refined essential model and skip the first-stage review. If you plan to do it this way, read Chapter 1.10 Refining an Event-Response before starting, then compare your answer with Chapter 3.9’s. However, because this is the first event, we suggest that you proceed cautiously and use the following directions.
What to Do
Refer to the current physical data flow diagrams and the data dictionary in Chapter 3.6. Build a physical event-response process model for event 9 New agency wants to do business. Remember your model may contain implementation-dependent characteristics. Check your model with the sample in Chapter 3.8.
Trail Guide
Easiest, More Difficult, and Most Difficult: Go to Chapter 1.10 Refining an Event-Response, where you will remove the physical characteristics of the model you have just built.
Promenade: Either accompany the others to Chapter 1.10 Refining an Event-Response, or resume your trail in Chapter 2.10 Essential Viewpoint.
