5 Cattle

I was introduced to cows on a family trip to Ideal Farms in New Jersey, where they raised dairy cattle. I remember being surprised at how big they were when I first saw them up close!

After I was married, my husband and I often walked on my husband’s family farm in Kentucky, and I always enjoyed seeing the cows. There is something very peaceful about a field full of cattle, especially when it is dusk and they are settling down for the night. In the springtime, the calves are fun to watch as they scamper and play together. In the winter, I like seeing their wooly coats and their warm breath in the cold air.

Now that we have our own farm, we have our own cattle. Some of these cows we brought back from a three-year stay in Texas, and others came from Kentucky, so we have a mixture of longhorn, Brahman, Hereford and Angus. Eleven of these cows have names and are permanent residents. I never tire of sketching, photographing or just observing them in their daily lives.
