10 Raccoons & Woodchucks

Raccoons are intelligent animals that can adapt to a variety of environments, including urban areas. Their most striking feature is the black mask, which is surrounded by white fur. The animal’s fur color ranges from gray to black, with black and white banded guard hairs and short grayish or brown ish underfur. The raccoon appears in Native American folklore as a trickster who can outsmart his enemies and use his hands like a human.

Also called the groundhog or whistle pig because of its habit of whistling shrilly when alarmed, the woodchuck is actually an oversized squirrel belonging to the marmot family. Commonly seen in farm fields where they enjoy sunbathing outside their burrows after a meal, woodchucks are also often seen feeding by roadsides. It has a bushy tail of medium length and strong claws used for digging.
