Giving Compliments

‘Too often we underestimate the power of … an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.’ – Leo Buscaglia

You've probably experienced what it feels like when someone else says something nice to you. A simple compliment can brighten your day and make you feel good about yourself.

Compliments are a mark of mindful awareness. Why? Because to give a compliment you first have to be aware and acknowledge – to actively look for and comment on – other people's efforts and good intentions.

When you give praise, show appreciation or simply say ‘thank you’, your remarks let the other person know that their actions have been noticed.

Because compliments make the world a better place, everyone should learn how to compliment. You don't need to worry about getting the wording just right. You just need to keep in mind that a genuine sentiment phrased a bit awkwardly is better than saying nothing at all.

Compliments are gifts. They are not asked for or demanded. You don't need to be an expert to do it well. You just need to be honest and genuine.
