The application of deployable packages is performed by a PowerShell script on the target server. There are agents installed on LCS deployed servers that allow LCS to perform this task.

The processes are as follows:

• Download the deployable package to the target server or servers (test and production environments have multiple servers and the components installed on each may vary)
• Extract the deployable package
• Apply the update to the server using the PowerShell scripts included in the package
• At the end of the process, the servers' services are restarted

This process is best used, and is, in fact, mandatory for applying updates to customer implementation environments. You can't apply an update to production servers that hasn't been applied to the sandbox server through LCS.
